Indoor cat safety checklist for every room

Published 2026-05-02

Indoor cats live in the same environment you do, which means human foods, plants, and small objects can become emergencies.

Priority hazards

  • Lilies (many species): extremely toxic to cats—even pollen grooming can cause kidney failure. Do not keep lilies in the home.
  • String, tinsel, and hair ties: linear foreign bodies can require surgery.
  • Open washers/dryers: always check the drum before closing the door.
  • Window falls: secure screens; “high-rise syndrome” is common where windows tilt.

Enrichment that also improves safety

Rotating toys, vertical space (cat trees), and scheduled play reduce boredom-driven chewing and door-dashing.

If you suspect poisoning or ingestion of a foreign object, contact your veterinarian or an emergency clinic immediately.
